Born in 1989 in suburban New York, Cody TheCreative displayed a natural talent for drawing at a very young age, picking up a pencil at just two years old. Throughout his early childhood, he was rarely seen without a drawing utensil in hand. His love for art led him to pause VHS tapes to sketch his favorite characters, as well as those featured on album covers and baseball cards. By the age of eight, he held his first solo exhibition in Greenburgh, NY titled, Heroes and Icons.
Unlike many individuals who strive to fit in, Cody was uninterested in being defined by societal norms. Embracing his uniqueness, he spent his formative years exploring the boundaries of his own individuality. While his artistic pursuits were briefly put on hold, they were reignited while completing a Creative Writing degree at SUNY Purchase. Taking a life-drawing course with renowned visual arts professor, Roger Hendricks, rekindled Cody’s passion for art. Additionally, a summer class with landscape artist Todd J. Gordon introduced him to the beauty of nature as a subject, expanding his artistic horizons beyond just drawing people.
As Cody entered his late twenties, experiences of love and disappointment led him to dive into the world of abstract expressionism. This new artistic venture not only provided him with fresh techniques, but also a completely new vocabulary to explore and master. His approach to learning new techniques involves gaining control to then break the rules confidently, allowing him to continuously push the boundaries of his creativity. This method has led to the creation of various projects, including Just an Easel and a Dream (pastel work), PennyPopArt (acrylic on copper), Cody's Wearable Art (hand-painted clothing & sneakers), and Splattered Skies (acrylic on canvas).
